Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)
A bitter-tasting herb, wormwood is most famously an ingredient in the alcoholic drink absinthe. In traditional medicine, it has been used to treat:
Digestive issues: Bitter compounds in wormwood can stimulate digestive juices and bile production.
Inflammatory conditions: Some animal studies suggest potential anti-inflammatory properties, with a small-scale study showing benefits for Crohn's disease.
Pain relief: Some research indicates anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, and a 2017 study found topical wormwood ointment as effective as piroxicam gel for knee osteoarthritis.
Parasites: It has a long history of use against intestinal worms.
Antimicrobial effects: Some research suggests potential antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Antioxidant properties: Contains compounds that may combat oxidative stress.
Black walnut hull (Juglans nigra)
The hull of the black walnut tree is used in traditional herbal medicine for its cleansing properties.
  • Antimicrobial and antiparasitic: Compounds like juglone and tannins are known to fight parasites and harmful bacteria in the gut and on the skin.
  • Digestive support: It is used to help cleanse the digestive tract and support a healthy balance of gut flora.
  • Antioxidant properties: It is rich in antioxidants, including tannins, which help protect cells from damage.
  • Skin health: Its astringent properties are used to treat minor skin irritation

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Dried flower buds of the clove tree have been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory: Cloves are rich in phenolic compounds like eugenol, which provide powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Pain relief and antiseptic: Clove oil, particularly its main compound eugenol, has long been used in dentistry for its pain-relieving and antiseptic qualities.

Antimicrobial: Studies have shown clove and clove oil to be effective against various bacteria, fungi (including Candida), and viruses.

Blood sugar control: A few studies suggest that clove extract may help lower blood glucose levels, possibly by improving insulin sensitivity.

Liver protection: Some studies have shown eugenol to help protect against liver toxicity.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum species)

Used as a spice and medicine for centuries, cinnamon contains compounds such as cinnamaldehyde that contribute to its medicinal properties.

Antioxidant: Cinnamon is high in powerful antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative stress.

Anti-inflammatory: The spice has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects that may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Blood sugar regulation: Compounds in cinnamon may increase insulin sensitivity and interfere with digestive enzymes, which can help control blood sugar levels.

Heart health: It can potentially lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL ("bad" cholesterol), and triglycerides.

Antimicrobial: Some studies have demonstrated its effectiveness against certain bacteria and fungi.

Brain health: Research suggests a potential role in protecting against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
