What Is a Hydrosol? Respiratory Benefits of Mullein, Clove & Bay Leaf

Hydrosols: The Gentle Power of Plant Water

When herbs are steam-distilled to produce essential oils, the steam that passes through the plant material carries with it water-soluble plant compounds — aromatic molecules, trace essential oil droplets, and therapeutic constituents that don't make it into the oil. This aromatic water is called a hydrosol (also known as a floral water or plant water).

Hydrosols are gentler than essential oils but still therapeutically active. They're water-based, making them safe for direct contact with mucous membranes — including the delicate tissues of the respiratory tract. This makes them ideal for use in sprayers, nebulizers, steam inhalation, and nasal rinses.

The BREATHE Hydrosol Formula

Our BREATHE Hydrosol combines four botanicals specifically chosen for their respiratory affinity:

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Mullein is the premier lung herb in Western herbalism. Its large, soft leaves have been used for centuries to soothe irritated airways, reduce inflammation in the bronchial tubes, and act as a gentle expectorant. As a hydrosol, mullein delivers these benefits in a form that can be inhaled directly into the lungs.

Bay Leaf (Laurus nobilis)

Bay leaf has antimicrobial, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It's been used in traditional medicine for respiratory infections, congestion, and bronchitis. The aromatic compounds in bay leaf hydrosol help open the airways and clear congestion.

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Clove is a powerful antimicrobial with analgesic properties. In a respiratory context, it helps address airborne and airway pathogens while reducing inflammation and pain in irritated tissues. As a hydrosol, it's gentle enough for direct inhalation.

Cassia Cinnamon

Cassia cinnamon is warming and antimicrobial, supporting circulation to the lungs and contributing to the formula's overall antimicrobial action. It also makes the hydrosol pleasant to inhale.
