Planting instructions

Location: Choose a spot that receives full or partial sun and has well-draining soil with a pH near 6.5.

Timing: Plant in the summer or fall before the first frost for the best results, although spring planting is also an option.

Spacing: Plant individual bulbs 2 inches deep, leaving 6-10 inches between them for larger bulbs. For a harvest of green onions and chives, you can plant them closer together, 2-3 inches apart.

Propagation: Plant the smaller bulblets (top sets) that form on the stalks. Separate them from the cluster, plant them about 1 inch deep with the green shoot pointing up, and space them at least 4 inches apart.

Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water after planting to settle the soil.

Maintenance and care

Weeding: Keep the area around the onions clear of weeds to prevent competition for nutrients and water.

Fertilizing: Egyptian walking onions are light feeders. You can add a quarter-inch of compost every couple of months.

Harvesting: You can harvest the green tops at any stage to use as scallions or chives. Leave at least one strong leaf to ensure the plant continues to grow.

Division: Since Egyptian walking onions are perennial, they will expand over time. You can divide the clumps to manage their spread or to get more plants for new areas.
